That pretty much sums up how I felt about this draft.

Heat front office, THANK YOU! I can't think of any (realistic) outcome that I could have possibly preferred more. We got (in my opinion) the best player in the draft (and he can play either forward position) and a the perfect PG (and a guy who most thought should go in the first round) to play next to Dwyane Wade. And we started off with the #2 and #52 picks. This leaves me incredibly excited about the Heat's future, starting with this upcoming season. I truly believe we can win it all. And don't be surprised to see us make some more moves, probably great ones.

Anyways, I'll say more later, but I've got to go for now.

Peace

Sports Video of the Week

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88zWUKEHx0w

Just incredible. It kind of says something when the best playoff game was the first Suns-Spurs game in the opening round. Although there were a couple of close Finals games, none of them seemed to really come down to the wire. If my memory is correct, you could tell with about 95% certainty who was going to win each game with 20 seconds to go. In the Finals, I don't like that. I want at least 1 or 2 games to be decided on last second shots (make or miss).

Oh well. At least the Heat have the number 2 pick in the draft. There is no reason this team shouldn't be a contender next season. I see a lot of people on Miami Heat message boards saying things like, "With Beasley, we should be able to get the 7 or 8 seed next year."

What???!!! First of all, we don't know for sure that the Heat will get Beasley, although it looks pretty likely. And second of all, the 7 or 8 seed? Seriously? I think Miami will be legitimate championship contenders. Yes, I know Miami only won 15 games this year. But look at the 2005-06 roster, when we won it all. Can you honestly tell me that team was MUCH better than the Heat should be this year? Look at it this way, the Heat are probably going to have either a potentially (depending on how Beasley turns out) incredible trio (something like Wade-Marion-Beasley or Wade-Marion-Brand) or a ridiculous duo, which would mean Marion AND Beasley were traded for someone. Based on star power alone, this Heat squad should be superior to the won that won it all. Now, I do think it's unlikely that we'll have as good role players as we had then, but, in the NBA, it all starts with superstars. As long as the Heat stay healthy, I'd be very disappointed with anything but another championship.

Trade Ideas

With the NBA Offseason approaching, I thought I'd head to ESPN's Trade Machine and try out some summer deals. Michael Redd seems to be the most popular name out there, but here's another idea:

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/features/traderesult?players=362~406~1979~3049~2010&teams=28~28~5~5~5&te=&cash=

Cleveland trades: Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Damon Jones
Cleveland receives: Jorge Garbajosa, Jason Kapono, T.J. Ford

Toronto trades: Jorge Garbajosa, Jason Kapono, T.J. Ford
Toronto receives: Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Damon Jones

Picks can be added to the deal, if need be.

Why Cleveland does it: They don't acquire a great #2 scorer, but they do get a good, young point guard. Ford can definitely give double digit points and about seven assists, which would be huge for this Cavs team. He gives the defense another player to worry about, and he can take some of the ball-handling pressure off of LeBron, who can now focus more on moving without the ball.
Yes, LeBron would still bring the ball up the floor a lot, especially at the end of games, but not nearly as much as he does now, where Cleveland's offense is basically "Watch LeBron."

Kapono doesn't have a great contract, but he is certainly one of (if not the best) the best three-point shooters in the league, which would be huge for Cleveland. When LeBron penetrates, the defense would either have to sag off Kapono (which most likely means a 3), or provide less help on LeBron (which probably means a layup or a foul).

Garbajosa can give some minutes at PF.

Cleveland's lineup might look something like this (after the draft and free agency):

T.J. Ford/Delonte West/Daniel Gibson/Eric Snow
Wally Szczerbiak/Bonzi Wells/Sasha Pavlovic
LeBron James/Jason Kapono
Anderson Varejao/Joe Smith/Jorge Garbajosa
Ben Wallace/JaVale McGee/Dwayne Jones

They could then trade one of their PGs, if need be.

Why Toronto does it: They gain a quality starting center without even giving up a starter (you could argue Ford over Calderon, but most would say that Calderon is slightly better).

Yes, Ilgauskas is getting older, but he's still got a few more mores of good production. In the East, he's still one of the top centers. He would give Toronto one of the best front lines in the NBA. Not many teams would have the depth to guard both Bosh and Ilgauskas, and, even without Kapono, the Raptors would still have some good 3-point shooters to turn to when the defense focuses on the paint.

Additionally, while Ford is a good player, it's clear that he could use a change of scenery, and the Raptors' point guard controversy would be solved.

Damon Jones can play the point in stretches, and he's still a good shooter.

Their lineup might look like this:

Jose Calderon/Chris Duhon/Damon Jones
Anthony Parker/Carlos Delfino/Brandon Rush
Jamario Moon/Joey Graham
Chris Bosh/Andrea Bargnani/Kris Humphries/Maceo Baston
Zydrunas Ilgauskas/Rasho Nesterovic/Primoz Brezec

I'll think of some more trades later.

Fantasy Answers

I'm not sure yet whether I'll make a separate post for each question, or if I'll put them all here, but I'll figure that out later. For now, I'll answer the first question:

65mustangs: I've been riding Alexi Ramirez but the Sox benched him for Uribe 2 nights in row. I can pick up Polanco for average and he is hot. Does anyone think Johnson or Kaz will be better over the long haul. I like Kaz but he seems awfuly streaky.

Good question. Unfortunately, I'm going to have to give you that ever-so-common answer: It all depends on the rest of your team.

Assuming your team is average in every category, I'd give the edge to Kazuo Matsui. He's owned in just about every league, and rightfully so. While he's not going to give you much in the HR/RBI departments, he'll score some runs, probably raise your team's batting average, and definitely will improve your team's stolen bases.

Polanco will probably give you a better average, but not by much. Their other stats will be fairly similar, with the exception of steals, in which Matsui will be a huge help.

Unless your team is dead last in average, I'd probably pick up Kaz.

finsandcanes: B.J. Upton or Grady Sizemore?

Surprisingly, I'm going to go with Upton.

Most rankings (such as Yahoo! and ESPN) have Sizemore slightly ahead of Upton (if I recall correctly). This is understandable, as Sizemore is one of the best HR/SB combos in the league.

Now, let's compare their 5x5 stats.

Sizemore has 1 more run and 1 more RBI. Very even there. His big edge has been HRs, of which he's hit 11 more than Upton thus far. That's a big difference.

Upton has 5 more steals and is batting 27 points higher.

Based solely off of this, most would say Sizemore is the better choice. But Upton hit 24 HRs last season (the same amount of Sizemore) and his hit a couple in the past few days. His power should soon return. Additionally, his batting averages this season and last season are both higher than Sizemore's career high. In fact, last year, Upton led in 2 categories, Sizemore led in 2, and they tied 1. But Sizemore had many more at-bats.

From here on out (meaning the rest of the season), I would slightly favor Upton. However, that really just depends on what you need. I expect runs and RBI to be about even, Upton to steal a few more bases and bat for a better average, and Sizemore to hit about 8 more home runs than Upton. If they were both only eligible at OF, I'd say they were exactly even, maybe even give Sizemore a tiny lead.

Upton is eligible at 2B, as well as OF, however so I'd give him an ever so slight edge over Sizemore (unless you're looking for HRs).

Fantasy Help

I may not be an expert, but I usually do pretty well when it comes to fantasy sports, so I'd like to offer some assistance to anyone in need of fantasy advice. It's certainly been a long time.

Anyways, let's get back to business.

It's a pretty interesting time in sports right now. We've got the NBA Finals, the baseball season is well under way, football isn't too far off -- cue the cheers of those who have just realized this -- , and horse racing is actually relevant to your average sports fan.

As for the main current sports event, the NBA Finals, let me start out by saying there couldn't be two teams in it I despise more (well, I guess Detroit is one notch above Boston on my hated NBA teams' list, but you get the point). Having said that, it'll certainly be interesting, and I'm sure I'll be watching all 4-7 games (for the league's sake and the viewers' sake, hopefully 7).

I have long criticized Kobe as a player (although I don't think there's any evidence of this on my blog), but, I have to admit, his play has been pretty damn impressive throughout these playoffs. I've always thought he takes far too many shots considering his relatively mediocre shooting percentage (and I still do), but he has shot slightly over 50% in this year's playoffs, so far:

http://www.nba.com/playerfile/kobe_bryant/index.html

I've got to eat some crow for that.

I have no idea why he's shooting so much better. You could say that the acquisition of Gasol helps his percentage, and it certainly does, but, remember, Kobe played with a prime Shaq, and he has never shot over 47% for a season, and only did it once throughout an entire playoff run, not counting this season. See the aforementioned link if you doubt me.

Maybe Kobe has suddenly become much better. Doubtful. Or maybe, he's actually playing smarter. I think this is much more likely. Because I'm not a Lakers fan, I hope Kobe starts playing like the old Kobe (you know, the one from about a year ago) rather than this new and improved one.

As for predictions, I think Boston will take it in 7. These teams are clearly the top 2 teams in the NBA this season, and it's only fitting that they would meet with everything on the line. Hopefully I'll be able to post more later backing up this prediction, but, for now, I'll just say that I think homecourt will prove to decide the series. I'm not talking about biased refs (I don't believe in those sort of conspiracies); I'm talking about the home team playing better.

In baseball, as I've said, I'm a Yankees fan, and it looks like they're finally starting to turn it around (thank goodness). Today was probably the most exciting Yankees game of the season to this point, and it makes me very optimistic about the upcoming games. If you are unaware what happened, the Yankees fell behind by 5 runs, only to win the game 9-8 on a 2 run walkoff HR by Jason Giambi (who was pinch-hitting). It was great! Go Yankees!

Finally, I'd like to add that I'm thrilled the Heat got a top-2 pick, and I see no wrong ways of using this pick. Whether the Heat pick Rose, Beasley, or Mayo, or trade the pick for a proven All-Star, I'm very excited about next season.

Well, that's it for now.

Hope you enjoyed reading this, and please check back on the blog!

P.S. This past month has been one of the worst months (sportwise) of my life.

Some things, pertaining to my favorite teams, that have happened from October 8, 2007-November 8, 2007 (today):

The Yankees are eliminated from the playoffs.

A-Rod won't be with the Yankees next year.

The whole Joe Torre fiasco.

The Heat lose all 7 preseason games.

The Heat lose their first 4 regular season games.

The Dolphins go 0-3.

Ronnie Brown tears his ACL, sidelining him for the remainder of the season.

The U goes 1-2.

Kentucky loses by 16 points to Gardner-Webb.

Thankfully, things are bound to take a turn for the better. As I've said before, as long as D-Wade and Shaq are healthy, I think the Heat are taking the trophy once again this season. Because you know Shaq will command a double team in the playoffs, and a healthy Wade is just about unstoppable. Plus, Miami has got some very good role players and coaching. I expect them to turn it around.

Please let me know if I'm missing anything...I probably am!

Have you had some bad luck with your sports teams? It would be just for the remainder of this season (not a keeper league), and settings would be standard.

#1 Tom Brady
Tough one. Almost certainly either Brady or Peterson, with an outside chance of Tomlinson. But I guess I'll have to give Brady the edge here. Although RBs are more important than QBs in fantasy, and I almost never advise taking a QB in the first round (or even in the second round, for that matter), Brady's numbers have been flat-out ridiculous. No one has scored close to as many points as him with just about any settings.

#2 Adrian Peterson
While some might still be afraid of the fact that he's still a rookie, his numbers should be convincing enough. He's on pace to have one of the best seasons EVER, and it's hard to justify taking anyone but Brady over him. Did I mention he has a 6.6 rushing average (more than two times as high as Cedric Benson's 3.1 yards per carry; Benson was probably picked about two rounds before Peterson in most drafts)?

#3 LaDainian Tomlinson
Tomlinson has still been one of the best fantasy backs this season, and, barring injury, you know that will remain the case. You can feel confident with him as your first rounder.

#4 Joseph Addai
Incredibly close between Addai and Westbrook at this spot. I give Addai a slight nod due to the fact that he's a little less injury prone, his numbers are a little better than Westbrook's, and opposing defenses can focus on Westbrook more than they can Addai.

#5 Brian Westbrook
He's in the top 10 in the NFL in receptions and top 40 in receiving yards. He's also one of the best RBs in the NFL. Not bad, if you ask me!

#6 Willis McGahee
The complaints should come pouring in right about...now! True, there are other good options here, but McGahee has been incredibly consistent, scoring at least 10 points in every game in standard formats. He's also fifth in the NFL in rushing yards, and, although he MIGHT miss a game from this head injury, it doesn't look like it'll be too serious.

#7 Marshawn Lynch
Another rookie RB, so people may be unsure if he'll keep it up. But you can't argue with success. Fourth in the NFL in rushing yards, tied for seventh in rushing TDs.

#8 Willie Parker
I know he has had a couple of bad weeks and hasn't scored much this year, but I think he can stay in the top 2 in rushing yards (or at least top 3) while increasing his TD total.

#9 Reggie Bush
Look at his past six games. I know, I couldn't believe it either.

#10 Randy Moss
It's rare to see me advise picking a WR this early, but he's been that good. I think his numbers will slightly dip, but not much.

#11 Clinton Portis
He's in the top 7 in rushing yards and top 5 in rushing TDs (plus he went to the U!). I probably could have even placed him a couple of spots higher on this list.

#12 Edgerrin James
He's cooled down a bit, but has had at least 1 rushing TD or 80 rushing yards in all but one game this year. Impressive.

#13 Marion Barber
I know he's having a fantastic season, but it's hard for me to put him in the top 10 when there is another RB on his team within 9 carries of him. If Julius Jones starts off a game very well, Barber probably won't have a great game. That's not something you want to have to worry about from your top RB. It's probably not fair, but that's how I see it.

#14 Brandon Jacobs
I thought he would be one of the best RBs coming into this season, and I still feel that way. He's averaging 106 rushing yards per game over his last four games, and also has a pair of TDs during that span. I actually think he may creep his way into the top 6 or 7 RBs by season's end.

#15 T.J. Houshmandzadeh
He's scored a touchdown every week. And he's a WR! Enough said. Actually, it's not. I should add that, the reason I have him this far down the list isn't because I think he'll have a significantly worse second half, it's because I value RBs EXTREMELY highly when it comes to fantasy football.

# 16 Maruice Jones-Drew
He's played a lot better as of late and is looking like the guy people thought of when they used a top 15 pick on him.

# 17 LenDale White
He's been good in all but two games this season, and most people would put him in the top 15, but, for some reason, I think his numbers will fall quite a bit within the next few weeks. Not enough to make him a bad #2 RB, but enough to put him here on my list.

#18 Braylon Edwards
Not including Week 1 (when Charlie Frye was Cleveland's QB for most of the game), Edwards is averaging over 98 yards receiving and more than a TD a game. You read that correctly.

#19 Terrell Owens
Say what you want about his attitude, but he's in the top 5 in receiving yards and is tied for 6th in TD catches.

#20 Jesse Chatman
You know I've got to put a 'Fin on this list! Besides, it's not too far-fetched to think he can be a top 20 fantasy player for the rest of the season, The Dolphins have been terrible this year, but the O-line has done their part, and Chatman has skills.

On the Bubble: Antonio Gates, Tony Romo, Derek Anderson, Kevin Jones, Plaxico Burress, Frank Gore, Steven Jackson, Reggie Wayne

Hope you enjoyed it!

Agree? I'm pumped! On the road against one of the best teams in the NBA, and the Heat NEED to avoid starting out 0-4. If Miami can play at least .500 ball until Dwyane Wade comes back (actually, I know the Heat CAN do this; I should have said WILL play .500), I think the Heat will be just fine. I'm really excited about this season, and, even with the rough start, I really think the Heat are going to win it all this season (maybe that's just the homer in me, but I hope not!).

Can someone explain to me...?

Why do so many people criticize the Yankees for spending so much money? Sure, the Yankees obviously do spend a lot of money on their team, but it is completely within the rules, so why do so many people continue to complain about it and hate the Yankees for it?

If the NFL suddenly changed the rules so that teams were allowed five downs to pick up a first down rather than four (yes, I know, bad example), how could someone possibly justify complaining so much about a team using all five downs to the point that they were basically calling it cheating?

In essence, that's what it's like with the complaints about the Yankees payroll. The Yankees are taking advantage of the fact that they are allowed to spend a lot of money. I just don't see what's wrong with that. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that, for the most part, higher payroll=better team (obviously there are exceptions to this rule, but I think it holds true the majority of the time). So what's wrong with a team's owner trying to make their team more competitive by signing players to big contracts? Other owners have the ability to do this, as well. Maybe not to the extent that The Boss does it, but they can still spend a lot of money. They would just rather pocket it for themselves. If anything, people should be upset with the rule, not the Yankees.

And what really irritates me is the following situation. I find out someone's favorite team is the Red Sox. Now, that does annoy me, somewhat, but they have every right to be a Red Sox fan, just as much as I have the right to be a Yankees fan. The part that really annoys me is when I ask why they like the Red Sox, and they respond, "Because I hate the Yankees for spending too much money."
NOT ACCEPTABLE!
Now, if you like the Red Sox for some other reason, then I can understand that, but how can someone like them for the reason above???!!! First of all, I am usually against people liking something simply because they dislike its opposite. But to take it this far is absolutely absurd. It's not like the Red Sox are struggling to survive in MLB, desperately searching for more money. I'd say they spend quite a bit of cash, as well. So if you're going to hate the Yankees because of their payroll (which I think is wrong in and of itself), why not like the Marlins, Devil Rays, or Nationals?

And another thing: take a look at some of the players produced by the Yankees farm system.
Derek Jeter
Mariano Rivera
Melky Cabrera
Robinson Cano
Phil Hughes
Joba Chamberlain
Shelley Duncan

There are many more, not to mention recently retired players like Bernie Williams

I could be wrong, but I don't think there are many (if any) other teams that can match that quality of players who came up in their farm system. So it's not as like the Yankees just have a lineup full of signed free agents.

That's all I've got to say for now.

Thanks for reading!

P.S. To see a video in which a team actually does receive five downs, go to the following link:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=ZQJT8q0MMwQ

The five downs start at about the 2:55 mark.

About Me

Hello, and welcome to my blog.

I created this to talk about one of my favorite things: sports. So let me tell you a little bit about me when it comes to sports. My favorite teams are the New York Yankees, Miami Dolphins, Miami Hurricanes, Miami Heat, and Kentucky Wildcats. You can call me a bandwagon fan; you can call me a fairweather fan, but I'm neither of the two and I'll support these teams for life.

Now, I'm not going to lie. I am biased when it comes to these teams. It is EXTREMELY rare for me to ever think one of my favorite teams is going to lose (or express that feeling, at least). So if I'm ever talking about any of the above teams, please remember that, odds are, you should take what I say with a grain of salt.

I also love to do fantasy football, and I'd be happy to give you advice. If you have any questions you want to ask me, just leave a comment.

Basically, I just want to let everyone know my thoughts on what's going on in the world of sports, and I want to get your thoughts, as well.

I always appreciate feedback (whether it's the positive or negative type), and I always enjoy reading comments.

Well, I guess that just about wraps it up. I'll make another post very soon, and it's going to be quite controversial ;-)
